English Home Language is a compulsory subject, taken by all students at Glenwood. Under the new FET system all boys prepare for the National Senior Certificate Examination at the end of Grade 12. In this new system – there are no grades, all students are required to write the same paper at the end of the year.
The syllabus from Grade 8 to Grade 12 incorporates Literature, Language, Oral aspects and Creative Writing. Extensive use is made at all times of the school’s modern media centre as well as the smart boards that are used in many classrooms.
In Grade 8 and 9 they are working on an Outcomes Based Education system which has proven to be very useful as far as teaching key skills in the last few years.
There are a range of extra-curricular activities available; from Debating and various Public Speaking competitions to quizzes and Drama. We aim to teach our pupils to read more widely, think more critically, to speak more confidently, and write more clearly.
The English Department is a vibrant department and contains committed staff, who strives to teach with passion in the classroom and to effectively pass on their considerable knowledge to the pupils that they teach. On that note we would like to welcome Mr G.Muller and Mr R.Baxter in to our department this year – we wish them all the best
