Our Science outreach programme is a minds-on science programme that brings innovative instruction in natural science to disadvantaged primary school learners. The aim of the programme is to get learners in primary school excited about science.
The programme runs over the first three terms of the school calendar. Every Tuesday afternoon learners from Mswilili Primary School, in Umlazi, are transported to Glenwood High School, where they receive a science lesson with worksheets and activities. These lessons take place under the direction of a science teacher and Grade 11 Glenwood boys. The role of the Grade 11 boys is to be a mentor as well as assisting the primary school learners with difficult concepts and language. Mswilili learners are then given a sandwich and juice before returning back to their school.
It is a very rewarding experience to work with the learners from Mswilili. The enthusiasm and dedication of the participating staff and Grade 11 boys contributes to the smooth and successful running of the programme.
The opening of the new Science Centre has created the opportunity for more ‘hands-on’ science activities this year. Watch this space for new and exciting ventures!
