Glenwood Hockey has a proud tradition producing 42 South African Schools representatives since 1960.Most notable SA Schools Representatives being Mike Madsen (64-68), Paddy Madsen (71-72), Trevor Madsen (73-75) and dual Olympian and current New Zealand Assistant Men’s Coach Greg Nicol (91-92).Our most recent success being Shanyl Balwanth (2002).Shanyl is currently part of the South African Men’s Side and was part of the Beijing Olympics selected squad of 18.
Our Glenwood Hockey programme currently is run by our Director of Hockey, Brendon Carolan. Brendon is currently the South African Boys U18 A and U19 head coach. He is currently the only coach in African with the Federation of International Hockey High Performance Coaching Certificate.
Glenwood’s hockey program was given a tremendous boost with the acquisition of our brand new Tiger turf facility in 2008. It is currently the only turf of its kind in South Africa and one of the few schools to boast a water base facility. This facility is able to host international hockey games and also consists of a clubhouse with dual changing and shower facilities. The South African Men’s Olympic side, South African U21 and South African Girls U18 Side have all played against international opposition on our facility.
Currently Glenwood Hockey fields 9 Teams across the board with Brendon Carolan heading up the 1st team. Currently our coaching staff consists of Aiden Lotz, Steve Wiggett who have represented South Africa 19.Mike Wiggett and Justin Collins who have both represented the KwaZulu Natal Men’s side.
Our 1st side will be going to the NOMADS hockey tournament during the April holidays. This year it is based at Pretoria Boys High. It is the most prestigious hockey tournament is the country and boats the like of Grey College, King Edward, Jeppe, Pretoria Boys and Wynberg to name a few.
Our U14 A side will be attending the Ken Florence U14 Festival, this year hosted at Northwood during the April holidays.
Another great initiative is the annual Zululand Steam Boys U13 Hockey Tournament from 26-28 June. We will have 11 top primary schools attending our Festival with DPHS, Highbury and Penzance to name a few.
This year looks to be an exciting year for Glenwood Hockey with the year round work of our Hockey Academy paying dividends. Please keep your eyes on the Glenwood Hockey webpage for updated fixtures and results for the 2009 season
