Accounting

Grade 10 to Grade 12, pupils can choose to take Accounting in the FET Phase and those that have made this choice are likely to benefit from the knowledge that they will gain during the 3 years, both in terms of their personal financial affairs as well as if they choose to continue studying Accounting in their tertiary education. Accounting as a subject, requires an analytical mind as the subject has changed greatly over the years with a far greater emphasis being placed on interpretation of financial data rather than just on bookkeeping. It also encourages pupils to see the importance of ethical behaviour, particularly in a business environment, as this is stressed throughout the 3 years of study.

All Accounting pupils are given the opportunity to participate in the annual JSE Schools’ Challenge in either their Grade 10 or 11 year. This gives them a valuable insight into the working of the Stock Exchange as well as why it is important to research a companies performance before investing any of their hard-earned money into a public company. Glenwood Teams have proved to be very successful in this National Competition, coming 1st and 5th in South Africa in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

Grade 11 pupils often choose to do their Work Experience in various Accounting firms in Durban which gives them a hands-on experience and an idea of what is involved in becoming a Chartered Accountant, Auditor etc. As many of the Accounting pupils indicate that Accounting is the field they want to move into after their studies are complete, this Work Experience gives them a better idea as to what this career involves and assists them in putting the theory knowledge they have gained at School into practise.
