Athletics Report

2009 Inter-House Athletic Championship

On Saturday 5th September Glenwood hosted their Inter-House Athletic Championships. Throughout the preceding week, field events took place every afternoon with an average of 215 athletes throwing and jumping in the various events. This has been, by far, the largest participation of athletes at Glenwood in athletics for many years.

The javelin produced some fine performances with Shaun Adendorff falling 2m short of the u17 school record. I’m sure that with the appropriate training, Shaun would easily set a new standard in the U17 age group. The shot put was consistently the best event, with many athletes throwing 10m or more. It is encouraging to note the number of quality athletes Glenwood has walking along its corridor.

Saturday was set aside exclusively for track events. Unfortunately the strong head wind meant that no records were under threat. There were, however, some sterling performances with junior athletes recording times just over the 12sec barrier. With better conditions, I am confident that some of our older records may have come under threat.

Gibson House was the clear favourite and dominated the majority of the track events. They increased their lead steadily throughout the day and ended worthy champions.

The final tally read as follows:

  1. Gibson                   362 points

  2. McCabes               153 points

  3. Kennedy’s              93 points

  4. Blanksby’s             74 points

  5. Early’s                     63 points

The competition for Victor Laudorum was closely contested in each age group. Athletes were awarded points depending on their positions in the events they took part in. Clearly, the athlete who participated in more events stood a greater chance of winning. In one age group, 1 point differentiated 1st from 2nd.

The age group winners were:

  1. U14 Victor Laudorum:          S. Ngcobo (Gibson)

  2. U15 Victor Laudorum:          C. Swart (Gibson)

  3. U16 Victor Laudorum:          D. Moolman (Gibson)

  4. Open Victor Laudorum:        S. Ardendorrf (McCabes)

Well done to all the winners of the various events and to all those who participated. I would like to thank all the parents for supporting the event and look forward to next years Championships.

Finally, I would like to thank Mr Victor Vaz, the Guest of Hounor for handing out the trophies and for his long standing relationship with GlenwoodHigh School. We surely look forward to his involvement in the future.
