Business Studies tour to ABI.

On the 21st April 2010, the Glenwood Business Studies department organized a tour for the Business Studies pupils to ABI (Amalgamated Beverage Industries). The tour began with an introduction from the facilitator who explained the history of Coca-Cola and ABI. We then watched a 20 minute documentary of Coca-Cola, where we learned that the secret recipe for Coke was found by a man boiling a few unknown things together, adding sugar and water and carbonating the mixture to form what we know as coke today. We learned some really interesting facts. Coca-Cola is the biggest and most well known brand in the world. Apparently the font with which Coca-Cola is written on all its products has not yet been changed since its start in 1886 either, and neither has the taste!

After hearing the talk and watching the documentary, we were taken into the viewing area of the actual process of making Coca-Cola beverages, which was fascinating. We learned about a recently installed machine all the way from Germany that can push out 800 cans of coke every minute, that’s 48 000 cans an hour. Watching the process from beginning to end is truly fascinating. We also got to see the 2 Litre bottles being blown up into shape, wrapped with the branding, and filled and packaged all at the same time.

The Glenwood Business Studies pupils really enjoyed the Tour of ABI, and our learning experience regards  marketing, brand power, processing and engineering will be remembered everytime we open an ABI product.
