Cricket vs Kingsway: 20/20

GlenwoodHigh School
1st XI Cricket vs Kingsway
20/20 Limited Overs

The “Baggygreens” played their final round robin game in the 20/20 limited overs competition against the unbeaten KingswayHigh School. With both teams on three points a win would, ultimately, allow the victorious team to progress to the knock-out round. It was, therefore, comforting to have captain Sunkari back from national hockey duty for such a crucial game.

Sunkari kept his winning streak with the toss and chose to bat on a flat, dry wicket. Openers Browne and Ramsaroop immediately found the going difficult as the track was playing very low with many deliveries pitching on a good length and skidding through ankle height. Browne was eventually trapped LBW trying to improvise on an uncertain batting surface. Young Wissing started briskly but was bowled from by a good length delivery. G. Venter was more destructive, hitting the ball to all areas of the park. His powerful stroke play allowed him to go over the inner circle and he quickly raced to 18. Unfortunately, he injured his knee during a single and was forced to retire hurt.

This brought captain Sunkari to the crease. After missing a number of games, he was keen to stamp his return with a solid performance and wasted no time upping the run rate. Ramsaroop and Sunkari put together a well played 68 run partnership before Ramsaroop was stumped for a well played 52 off only 47 balls. All-rounder Subrayen joined Sunkari and together the two put on 49 runs in quick time, Subrayen showing no respect for the Kingsway bowling attack, accumulating 29 runs off only 15 balls. Sunkari contributed 26 runs from 19 balls and Glenwood ended on 155 for 5.

On a difficult wicket, the target was always going to be a challenge. Opening bowlers Gouws and Sunkari ensured that the Kingsway batsmen were tied up from the beginning and the run rate quickly moved up to over 8/over. Spinners Subrayen and Bissoon continued their good form with the ball from Saturday’s games against Westville and destroyed Kingsway’s top order line up. Subrayen complimented his batting performance with figures of 4 overs – 3 wickets – 5 runs, an excellent economy rate of only 1.7 runs/over. Bissoon bowled equally well, returning figures of 4 overs – 2 wickets – 14 runs.

When the last ball was bowled, Kingsway were on 74 for 7 and Glenwood secured their place in the knock-out round with an 81 run victory. So far, the baggygreens have managed to retain their unbeaten record this year and their unbeaten run on Dixons since the beginning of last year.

Our next game will be on Thursday against the formidable HiltonCollege outfit in the Sunfoil 40/40 competition in Pietermaritzburg. We look forward to continuing  our friendship against our old rivals.
