Basketball players have a busy week.

The Basketball players have had a busy week this week with matches against DHS as well as St Nicolas' School from 'Maritzburg.

The 1st Team went down 4-56 to DHS and certainly learnt a great deal about attacking play.

Blood Bank thanks Glenwood.

The Blood Bank was at Glenwood again earlier this week and they awarded the Glenwood boys with a special certificate for the number of pints of blood donated in 2009.

Well done to the boys and to Mrs Barnes for involving us in this important social awareness project.

I am looking forward to announcing the winner of the Inter House 'blood-letting' competition for the 1st Quarter of 2010.

Sailing Report.

On Sunday, 10 January 2010, Glenwood High School sailing master Mr Ron Pet and old boy Dylan Evans particpated on the L26 yacht Container World in the annual 2-handed race sailed off Durban from Addington to Umhlanga Rocks and back.  Unlike the previous year when the pair won the race in light airs, this was going to be a tough race with the wind reported to gust up to 30 knots.  After a very hard beat to the turning point off Umhlanga lighthouse which saw a number of the larger boats dropping out generally due to equipment failure, the pair rounded in first position and were looking forward to the downwind leg with lots of surfing down the waves which had by now grown considerably in size.  However on rounding the front two thirds of the tiller arm broke and it was going to be a difficult task stearing in those winds to maintain first position.  The second placed boat eventually passed Container World off the new stadium and on reaching the finish area had pulled to approximately 5 boat lengths ahead.  The finish boat however had had to move the finish line due to the rough seas in that area and on spotting this Container World changed her course and managed to cross the line first.

Also sailing L26 was Carl Zimmerman who initially struggled in the rough conditions due to the fact that he had very little weight on board to keep the boat flat but perseverence paid off and he finished in a very creditable third place.

On Sunday 24 January 2010 the Royal Natal Yacht Club hosted the Umhloti Mayors race.  The course for the racing boats started off Addington up to a turning mark off Sibaya and back to the start area.  The wind was predicted to increase from 12 knots at the start to 15 knots by midday.

Container World and B2G2, both L26 class yachts, were sailed by Mr Pet with Dylan Stopforth and new Grade 8 sailor Eli Brophy-Tintinger on board and Carl Zimmerman, respectively.

At the start at 10.00 am the wind blew at approx. 8 knots and the 20 entries made moderate progress to the turning mark.  Container World took an inshore route while B2G2 took the offshore leg which turned out to be the correct way to go.  The wind increased to approximately 12 knots by the time the leading boats turned off Sibaya.  By the time the smaller boats arrived at the turning mark, the wind had dropped to 6 knots and the sail home was long and frustrating in temperatures soaring into the 30's.

After the handicap calculations had been done, B2G2 was placed 3rd while Container World was placed 4th.

Andrew Plint produced some excellent golf at the SA U16 Championships during the recent vacation.

Athletics report: Saturday 23 January 2010

Athletics Report: Saturday 23 January 2010.

The athletics league meeting held at Kings Park on Saturday 23 January was well organised and despite the intense heat, well attended by many schools , resulting in as many as six heats in some events. This interest in athletics, especially by schools such as Glenwood, DHS, Westville Boys, Maritzburg College, Michaelhouse and Port Shepstone, just to name a few, shows a revival in schools athletics in KZN   This must be encourages and developed if athletics in the province is to grow. It was pleasing to note that some schools are even encouraging their rugby players to turn out and use the events as a training session.

Results are improving as the season progresses with athletes all wanting to qualify for the SA Championships in March. Justine Palframan (Eshowe) and Quintin Hitge(CKS) posted impressive performances in the Youth sprint events. Sabelo Ndlovu (FFTC) leaped an impressive 13,72m in the Youth Triple Jump.
