The Prefect Induction Ceremony took place at a special Assembly last week and it was well received by the School as well as visiting Parents.
The boys did very well signing their pledge to the School.
Well done to all concerned.
The Umhlali Information Evening took place this week and the Glenwood stand was well presented and well visited by many of the guests.
Well done to the boys and Staff.
The Interhouse Relay Gala took place this week and some wonderful swimming took place.
Well done to the Gibson House Swimmers for some excellent team performances.
After a frustrating Thursday evening where the rain prevented a completed match against Kearsney, the hot, humid weather was a welcomed sight on Saturday as the Glenwood 1st XI prepared to take on the formidable Westville Boys’ High outfit. There were initial concerns that captain Sunkari would be unavailable due to national hockey commitments as would opening batsman/bowler Frost due to a fractured hand. The depth this year, however, meant that we were able to field a competitive unit both in the batting and the bowling department.
Browne lost the toss and was asked by Westville to take the new ball and field on an extremely uncomfortable humid morning. Openers Gouws and Atkins bowled an impeccable line and length and kept the Westville openers on the back foot, not allowing a partnership to develop. After 7 overs, Westville were struggling on 6 runs. Due to pressure from the seamers and no significant runs on the board, Westville eventually lost one of their openers to an easy catch at mid-off.
Seamers Elliot and Langley picked up from openers Gouws and Atkins with restrictive line and length bowling, keeping the run rate at 2 runs per over. Shortly thereafter, spinners Bissoon and Subrayen took over the Glenwood bowling duties and further suppressed the Westville batsman with outstanding off-spin bowling. After their combined 20 overs were completed, figures of 20 overs – 5 wickets -35 runs reflected and impressive display of accurate spin bowling. The Glenwood inner fielding backed up the precise bowling and assisted in keeping the Westville score to a minimum. At one stage, Westville were reeling at 77/8. After 50 overs, Westville had managed to recover to a competitive 142/9.
After re-shuffling the batting line-up due to the fact that Frost and Sunkari were unavailable, Ramsaroop and Browne took to the field and started the Glenwood innings with a revised 10 over spell before lunch. At the break, Glenwood were sitting on 35 without loss.
The interrupted luncheon didn’t disturb the Glenwood rhythm and Bowne, in particular, was ruthless with any wayward bowling. Ramsaroop eventually lost his wicket playing an irresponsible shot and Bisoon joined Browne for a brief stay before G. Venter and, unfortunately, followed Bisson shortly afterwards. Wissing then walked in and ably assisted Browne in knocking off the bulk of the runs before Browne departed with a well played 60. With only 30 odd runs to knock off Glenwood made heavy weather of scoring the remaining runs, losing 6 wickets in total. What should have been a more comfortable victory turned into a 4 wicket victory by the Glenwood 1st XI. Considering that 2 key players were missing, I am pleased with the performance and it allows the Glenwood unit to build on its momentum for the pivotal game against Hilton in the 40/40 Sunfoil Limited overs competition on Thursday.
The next week will see the “Baggy greens” play 3 games in three different formats of the game. Kingsway on Tuesday in the 20/20, Hilton in the 40/40 Day/Night and Northwood in the 50/50 KZN domestic season. With all games being important, the week ahead will be a testing time for the 1st XI.
We hope to maintain and build upon the winning rhythm and confidence and look forward to some tough, competitive fixtures.
Mr M Labuschagne
Mr A Slabbert
The second round of the 20/20 limited over’s cricket competition saw Glenwood take on New Forrest on their home turf. After bagging three points from our first game, a win in the second round would guarantee us moving forward to the play-off section.
As each week goes by, the players have adapted to the shorter version of the game, setting realistic goals both with the ball and bat. Fielding has become an integral part of the game as drop catches or miss fielding can affect the outcome of a game significantly. Our aim is to improve each facet of the game and in doing so, improve the team’s ability to perform in this format of the game.
Stand-in skipper, Dylan Browne, lost the toss and was asked to bat on a green, soft pitch. Openers Frost and Ramsaroop only managed to put 12 runs on the board before Ramsaroop played a loose cut shot and was caught at gulley. 2 runs later, Frost joined his opening partner in the pavilion and Glenwood was sitting on 14 for 2. Venter departed with the score on 48 and Browne with the total on 63 after 8.3 overs. Middle order batsmen Subrayen and Wissing came together and from the outset, dominated the bowling attack and put together a well constructed 108 run partnership. Subrayen ended with a superb 76 off 32 balls and Wissing 42 off 25. After the 20 overs, Glenwood ended up on an impressive 185/7, scoring at just over 9 to the over.
Defending a healthy total gave the Glenwood bowlers the confidence they needed to attack the New Forrest batsmen from the first delivery. All the Glenwood bowlers contributed with accurate, restrictive bowling. Atkins ended up being the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 overs for 6 runs, taking 3 wickets.
When New Forrest’s final wicket fell, Glenwood ended up victors by 146 runs. A good all round performance by an improving Glenwood team.
Glenwood’s next challenge is the formidable Kearsney outfit in the 40/40 format of the game in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday 4th Feb.
Despite Glenwood's SA U16 player, R. Myburgh being away on National duty, the remaining 1st Team players pulled off a convincing win over Westville at the Westville Country Club facility.
Well done to all players involved in the fixture. We look to strong showings this year and I am looking forward to watching you play as often as I can.

There was a full round of fixtures against Westville this weekend. In total nearly 30 matches were eventually played and Mr Munro, Mr Slabbert and Mr Labuschagne must be complimented on ensuring that all matches took place. I counted 10 different venues that need to be arranged and prepared and this is a fantastic achievement for both schools. Well done to all concerned.
The Glenwood 1st XI enjoyed a hard-fought victory over a tenacious Westville team and the players who replaced Frost and Sunkari stepped up to plate and assisted in ensuring victory for the team.
The 1st XI now move into a very busy week with no fewer than 4 fixtures being played in 7 days. Good luck to the Team.
Congratulations must also go to the U16A Team for the clinical way in which they went about their business at Varsity 4. This Team is growing into a force to be reackoned with and well done to all concerned.
Well done also to the U15A who pulled off a clinical victory over a well-drilled and confident Westville Team. To chase down 230 up at Westville is no mean feat.
Well done to all players, parents, coaches and Staff of the two schools.
