Memorial Weekend Sailing
Over the weekend of 13 and 14 February 2010, Royal Natal Yacht Club hosted its Memorial Weekend in honour of those yachtsmen and women that are still at sea. These include old boy Warren Ostendorff who was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident just months after his father was lost at sea in the loss of the yacht Moquini. For the keelboats a pursuit race was organised where the slowest boat leaves first followed at regular time intervals by the faster yachts. Twenty one boats entered the race held in very hot conditions with very light winds.
After a slow run down to the turning mark off the Hypermarket, the L26 Container World helmed by Keegan Olsen with Mr Pet, Dylan Stopforth, Bernard Bussey and Michael Dickenson on board was placed in the middle of the fleet and followed closely by another L26, B2G2, helmed by Carl Zimmerman with Kemba Quinn on the crew. Container World opted for an offshore leg to look for more wind while B2G2 followed the shoreline. Container World managed the light conditions better and eventually crossed the line in 6th position and first in the L26 class. B2G2 finished later, further down the order.
As the winners of the L26 class Container World will be awarded a new trophy donated by the wife of the late Jim Ferguson (an L26 owner) in his memory at the season ending prizegiving.

It was wonderful to see another SPUD casting in the Daily News earlier this week. Tyronne Bright of Form IIB heard this week that he had won an opportunity to be part of the cast of SPUD alongside the other 2 Glenwood boys already cast.
Well done.
We had a wonderful meeting with Mr Bob Poole (Glenwood 1935!) yesterday and we spent a great deal of time looking though old School Magazines. Mr Poole's handshake, at 94, was more firm than many a quarter of his age!
We are looking for information on Glenwood's oldest surving Old BOy and so please let Mr Jordan and/or Mr Oberholzer know via postmaster@glenwoodhighschool.co.za.
The Championship Gala had to be postponed last night due to some localised showers in the Glenwood area. The boys were not impressed at all and had to be chased off of the stands onto the stands to try and stay dry.
The Gala will now take place on Monday (22 Feb 2010) morning at 09H00.
Gibson House Grade 11 had their first stay in of the the new year and it was a fun filled weekend. The boys watched the movie Avatar at the massive and impressive IMAX theatre in Gateway on the Friday night, followed by a braai before watching the tough and wet Sharks vs. Chiefs match at the Absa Stadium. Every Grade 11 stay in has some form of community service as it is important to teach boys about giving and caring for the community. This term the boys decided to visit Nazareth House for Elders. Armed with Roses and Bible Scripture bookmarks and some cake for tea; the boys arrived at Nazareth House. The ladies and gentlemen were surprised and very happy to see the boys in Green and loved their gifts. The Gibson boys served all their guests with tea and enjoyed some great conversation from the ladies and war stories from the gentlemen. Quarters Hotel teamed up with the Gibson boys for the days and presented all the residents of Nazareth House with heart shaped cookies. The boys proceeded to sing some school songs and play the piano for the elders. It was great to see all the smiles and appreciation, it is of great importance that we look after our elders and the Gibson Grade 11 Boys took one step closer to appreciating and respecting elders. Well done boys! Watch this space for the next great and exciting Grade 11 stay in as we pick up the pace in term 2 with some new stay in ideas!
Well done to the boys and Staff at Gibson House!
Mr S Erasmus

The first round of the U14 Rugby Trials took place at school today and it was good to see so many boys (and Parents) getting involved in the day's activities.
Well done to all the boys and Staff and Parents (and some Grandparents) for taking the time on a Sunday to work on getting ready for the long rugby season coming up soon.
The final set of games brought out some really good players and we can look forward to another strong showing in 2010.
Mrs Criticos and her Media CentreTeam have put together a most comprehensive and informative Soccer World Cup display in the entrance to the Media Centre. The boys have already showed a great deal of interest in the display and once the tournament starts the information will be updated on a regular basis.
1st XI Cricket vs Northwood - Click here to view results in PDF
The Glenwood 1st XI cricket team has been riding a wave of good results lately, having recently won all their round robin matches in the 20/20 competition as well as the Sunfoil 40/40 day/night competition. Combined with their success in their domestic 50 over games “The Baggy Greens” are starting to put together a decent first half to their cricket season during their centenary year.
Recently, Glenwood beat Kingsway in the deciding game in the 20/20 league fixtures, securing a spot in the play-offs that will take place after the domestic season has been completed. During the same week, they then defeated Hilton College in the Sunfoil 40/40 day/night league, ending up top of the log and clinching a semi-final against The Presidents XI on Wednesday 17th Feb in Pietermaritzburg. In their previous local domestic game, they secured a decisive victory against rivals Westville Boys High School. With their confidence on a high, the Glenwood boys were motivated to retain their unbeaten record this year.
Still missing key players Grove Venter and Javier Frost, Glenwood has been fortunate have formidable back-up with the like of Travis Venter and Wade Elliot. Sumanth Sunkari has returned as captain and Dylan Browne is showing his potential with the bat as the season reaches a climax in the first term.
Sunkari lost his first coin toss of the year and Northwood asked the Glenwood outfit to bat first. Openers Ramsaroop and Browne set about accumulating runs with good running between the wickets, taking singles at will and keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Ramsaroop was dismissed just shy of a 50 run partnership, which brought Sunkari to the crease. Unfortunately, he didn’t trouble the scorers for long which saw in-form batsman Wissing walk in to bat. The Northwood bowlers managed to keep Wissing quiet while Browne looked at complete ease with the bat. A mix up between the two batsmen brought Browne’s innings to an abrupt halt and Wissing departed soon after that, leaving it to Venter and Subrayen to rebuild the innings. Keeping the run-rate above 4 to the over, both batsmen displayed control and purpose. Venter scored a patient 34 and Subrayen clocked another half-century, scoring 59 off 59 balls. The tail contributed with Gouws hitting 3 sixes, one of which saw the ball leave Dixons field and the Glenwood campus. Gouws ended on an impressive 26 off only 21 deliveries and Glenwood on 226.
The Glenwood bowlers have proven a handful of late, combining seam and spin bowling well to restrict teams and apply pressure. Opening bowlers Sunakri and Gouws were quick to find their line & length and Northwood struggled to score runs anywhere in the field. Elliot and Atkins were equally miserly, as were the spin duo of Subrayen and Bissoon. Atkins finished with outstanding figures of 3 for 18 in 6, with Subrayen and Elliot picking up 2 wickets a piece. All the Glenwood bowlers contributed with none of them going for more than 3 runs/over. With pressure mounting, the Northwood wickets fell at regular intervals and eventually the 10th wicket fell with the score on 80, handing Glenwood a 146 run victory.
This was arguably the best performance by The Baggy Greens in 2010 and with an important week to come, the Glenwood outfit will do well to maintain their rhythm and keep their focus. Wednesday will see the 1st XI play in the Sunfoil 40/40 day/night semi-final and if successful, the final the following day against either Michaelhouse or Maritzburg College.

Glenwood won by 146 runs.
The new Form II boys enjoyed some interesting activities while on the course this year at the NMR base.
The Glenwood High School Grade 7 Information Evening took place this week and went off very well indeed.
As usual we entertained a large and enthusiastic crowd.
The Glenwood Staff and boys produced some excellent displays.
It is February and already we have rugby happening! There were a series of trials matches played at Varsity on Friday afternoon.
I noticed that some of the boys were feeling the heat after a couple of chukkas.
There is lots of cricket against Northwood this weekend and it is always good to see boys having fun at all levels of the game.
The Glenwood High School Outreach programme continues to grow every year thanks to our generous donors!
This year we are assisiting more than 200 children per week with Maths, Science and Literacy lessons!
Well done to the Teachers involved as well as to the Glenwood boys whom provide their support to these youngsters in such a special and mature manner!
This week saw the Basketball Teams play Northwood and some good action was seen from both schools.
Well it was with great excitement we went off to Tiger Brands for a tour of Beacon Sweets. As much as the boys were warned to focus on the production lines and the production process I think they were slightly off track by the option of eating as many chocolates as they could possibly consume.
This is an amazing experience for the boys and the magnitude of this production line still leaves us in awe.
The huge chocolate silos containing the different types of chocolate, all controlled by sophisticated computerized systems, is unbelievable. The storage rooms containing the different ingredients imported from all over the world. To see the huge stock of sugar, cocoa, rice crispies, nuts and loads of other ingredients that go into the chocolates we eat on a daily basis.
After the tour the boys were allowed an opportunity to purchase stock from the staff shop. This was an added bonus as stock is cost plus 10%. Many of the boys sold their purchases to willing peers back at school at a much higher profit.
This is certainly one of the boys’ favourite tours, for reasons I do not need to explain.
On Monday 1st February and Monday 8th February we were very fortunate to take the Business Studies boys down to the stadium. All of our seven classes were afforded this privilege.
Most of us have seen the unmistakable silhouette of the stadium on our Durban skyline and what an experience it was to have been a part of the experience.
We were given a delightful and most educational presentation by “Mama2010”. The facts and figures regarding the building of the stadium were mind blowing. It was also very interesting to hear all about “The 2010 and Beyond Strategy” and “The Stadium Precinct Projects”. Some of these developments include: The People’s Park, Heroes Walk, Imbizo Place, Isaiah Ntshangase Avenue upgrade, Pedestrian linkage to the beachfront including the M4 Underpass, which we got to view and is still under construction.
The boys then had the option of a Sky Car trip to the viewing platform on top of the 360m long arch, 106m above the pitch, where they experienced spectacular views over the ocean and city.
After a tour of the stadium we can all say that this is truly an iconic masterpiece of which we can be very proud of having in our city.

Sunfoil 40/40 Limited Overs
The Glenwood 1st XI travelled to Pietermaritzburg to play their final round-robin fixture against old friends Hilton College. Unlike the previous wet week where the game against Kearsney was cancelled, this week the weather was warm and dry.
The “Baggygreens” have suffered some debilitating injuries of late, losing opening bowler and batsman J. Frost two weeks ago and then top order batsman G. Venter and strike bowler B. Langley in Wednesday’s 20/20 encounter with Kingsway. We are indeed fortunate to have depth in the open age group this year and two able replacements were brought up for first team duty.
This final encounter was a critical one as the winner would top the group and secure a place in next week’s semi-final clash against the President’s XI. After losing to Hilton in the fourth term last year, Glenwood were focused on ensuring victory in this encounter.
Captain Sunkari continued his winning run with the coin and elected to bat. With Frost sitting out, Browne was promoted to opener along with regular opening batsman, Ramsaroop. Unfortunately, Ramsaroop failed with the bat and was dismissed for a duck in the first over. Subrayen stepped in at number three and from the first ball, made his intention clear by attacking the bowlers and reached the boundry with ease on several occasions. After a breezy 32 and the total on 70, skipper Sunkari joined his vice-captain and continued where Browne had left off. Sunkari made a well played 17 off only 18 deliveries before a lapse in concentration saw him give his wicket away cheaply. Young Wissing came in at No. 5 and continued his impressive form building a 93 run partnership with Browne. Wissing, still only in grade 10, put together a well constructed innings of 35 runs from 45 balls before he was bowled. As Glenwood went in search of runs, Browne through caution to the wind and was caught trying to reach the boundary, departing with a sensational 110 runs off 120 balls, showing his class with a well deserved century. After the allotted 40 overs, Glenwood finished on 220 for 6, leaving Hilton with a run rate of 5.5 to win the game.
Glenwood opening bowler, Sunkari, got Glenwood off to an impressive start, picking up Hilton’s opener batsman for a duck off his second delivery. Hilton kept the game alive through attacking batting but, unfortunately, with the run rate steadily climbing, risks needed to be taken and with that, wickets fell at regular intervals. Subrayen, Atkins and Sunkari each picked up 2 wickets a piece and the majority of the bowlers were miserly with their runs. Hilton ended on 190 all out in the 49th over, giving Glenwood a 30 run victory and securing a spot in next week’s semi final against the President’s XI.
Mr M Labuchagne and Mr A Slabbert (1st XI Coaches)
Glenwood 1st XI won by 31 runs.
Glenwood boys, Jamie Royal (who will play Gecko) and Byron Langley (Simon) have been cast in the upcoming film version of the best-selling books, 'Spud'.
Rehearsals will start in March and will continue for 3 months.
Well done to the boys and I look forward to enjoying the film (with John Cleese in the lead role) as much as the books!
