Congratulations to Josh Smit of Grade 8 for winning both sets of the recent KZN under 15 Surfing Trials.
Congratulations also to Glenwood old boy, Jordy Smith, who became one of only two South Africans in at least eighteen years to make it the final in an ASP World Tour (formerly the ASP World Championship Tour) event when he beat nine-time world champion, Kelly Slater, and Californian wunderkind, Dane Reynolds, on his way to a showdown with former world number two, Taj Burrow, at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks (Australia). Although Jordy lost the final, this is a truly monumental achievement, especially considering the fact that Jordy lost his first round heat and had to fight his way back into the main event via the dreaded second round. This leaves Jordy in second position on the ASP World Tour, perfectly poised for an assault on the coveted world title.
In line with the Education Depatment's Safe Schools initiative Glenwood, once again, arranged with the local SAPS and Metro Police to conduct a thorough seach of bags, rooms and lockers with sniffer dogs. We are, once again, to announce that only one of the dogs discovered something to 'sniff at' and that was an open lunch box with a nice beef sandwich sticking out of it.
On a more serious note, it is part of our safety and security policy to protect boys and Staff here at Glenwood and so these surpise searches are important indicators for us to guage our LO programmes effectiveness wrt drugs, alcohol and weapons at school.
Thank you to the SAPS and Metro Police for helping us to protect our sons.
The Band were invited to perform at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last week. Well done to Mr Stengel and his team!
The Target Shooting Team is currently hard at work perfecting their art at a 'secret' location off-campus. They are planning their goals very carefully and we wish them well in their endeavours.
The rugby poles are up now for the long season that lies ahead in 2010. On Satruday the U14's, the U15's and the U16's had a series of trials matches and there was some very good play in evidence. It also became apparent that some youngsters have been training hard during the off season and so they look very strong and expolsive. Please check the web page for details of the fixture list for 2010. Starting times on Saturdays may well vary and so fixture times will be placed on the web page as soon as they are finalised (usually 2 days before the fixture). Please also note that we will continue with our access policy in 2010 in terms of charging an entrance fee to the grounds. This will be used to off-set increased security costs and also to supplement the School's extensive outreach programme (now involving more than 400 underprivileged boys and girls a week). I hope that you will support us in our endeavours to assist those less fortunate than ourselves.

Headmaster
3am Friday morning on the 26th of February 2010 and only our Under 14 ‘A’ Waterpolo team was awake at Gibson House. As we packed the bus for the weekend ahead of us, we had an idea of what was awaiting us - our boys had been drawn in Pool ‘C’ along with St. Stithians College, St. Peter’s College, Jeppe High School and Michealhouse College.
Our 1st match of the tournament was against St. Stithians at 12:40pm Friday. After a long bus trip we arrived at Jeppe with about 40 minutes to spare before our match. Our boys hit the water but were just not at their best. The long trip, waking up at 3am and also most of the boys having given their all at the D & D Gala the night before probably did not help with our first fixture. The boys played well. Unfortunately this match was to set the trend for the tournament with our boys coming to life only in the 2nd chukka of each match.
We finished the St Stithians match 11-1 with St Stithians scoring the bulk of the goals in the 1st Chukka. Our next match was against host school Jeppe and just like in the Sat Sthitians match we entered the 2nd Chukka 1 goal down at (1-0 , the boys came to life again and where able to win the 2nd chukka (7-0) and the match 7-1.
Saturday morning saw our boys take on St. Peter’s College at 9am. The boys needed the 1st chukka to wake up and again went into the break trailing 5-0 and again woke up and won the 2nd chukka 2-0 but it was too little too late and we lost the match 5-2.
With Michealhouse our last pool match, again another loss of 9-3. This meant we went into the playoffs for positions 16th or 13th against Parktown Boys School, Grey College and Crawford College (Lonehill). Our 1st playoff match was against Grey College in what was our best match and one that we shouldn’t have lost at all but due to poor passing and soft shooting we lost the match 4-3.
On Sunday we took on Parktown for the 15th – 16th playoff. As most sports teams know there is always one match in a tour where you really under perform and unfortunately that was our last match. The boys where just run down and tied and really offered up little defence to Parktown who took the match 7-0.
Our team would like to thank our generous sponsors, namely Meggar Armature Winders and SEC Electrical. Thank you so much for all you did for the side.
The boys learnt a lot of hard, good lessons from the tournament and will take this knowledge forward into the next tournament we play in October at Grey College in Bloemfontein.
Mr J.Leach
U14A Coach
The Glenwood Science Centre has just adopted some new reptiles into the Glenwood Family. The Centre now has three leopard geckos, 3 bearded dragons and one Boa Constrictor, Fluffy.
These latest additions have created much interest among the boys and Staff.
Glenwood's Accounting pupils excelled in the 2009 NSC Examinations achieving a 100% pass rate and 19 distinctions. The top pupil was Mahesh Iyavoo whom obtained 98%; a fine achievement. Well done to Staff and boys.
Old Boy and environmentalist, Mr Steve Rasmussen, offers to help out with the on-going 'greening' of the campus.
The Matric Dance for 2010 was held in the School Hall on Friday evening. It was a wonderful evening and Mrs Jones and her team need to be thanked for all of their hard work.
