GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL : PARENTS' ASSEMBLY : TERM 1 2009

Assembly opened with prayer and reading. Mr Kershaw welcomed new pupils and new staff and wished them well. He thanked people who gave of their time to the school during the vacation. Plan by checking weekly bulletin and Term Calendar. Pupils to comply with regulations. RCL elections to be held, after which the Code of Conduct booklets will be published. Teaching and extramural practices start today. Mr Kershaw congratulated the Top 5 pupils of each Grade at the end of last year. Well done to all concerned on 2008 Matric results. This year's matrics are encouraged to work hard and to produce good results. Please support our 2009 prefects in the execution of their duties. When asked, please get involved in 2010 Centenary celebrations preparations. No litter or graffiti, and pupils are reminded to look after the school's gardens and fields. The School received a very positive report regarding Kyle van Deventer, a past Head Prefect and Exchange Student in the U.K. An article in the eThekwini Municipality reports on the positive changes planned for Durban in 2009. Cricket: K Pearce qualifies for 1st XI Cap and C Chetty was chosen for the S.A. Colts Dolphins 'B' Team. Matt Stevens encourages our boys not to do drugs. Mr Erasmus and his team were congratulated on the success of the High Performance Camp. Matrics reminded not to go beyond ends of Hall at any time. No sitting on tables as they are 'bowing'. The Science/Maths Centres and Hockey Turf are all excellent projects. Boys reminded no cellphones/iPods etc at School. Sports practices / formal uniform for fixtures. Shower and change after sport. Pay R90 today for the Life Orientation books/diaries. Very important: L.O. as a subject. Cricket College Week: Glenwood vs St Johns - draw; Glenwood vs Pretoria Boys - lost; Glenwood vs Trinity House School - won. Softball: C Pearce, U13 and K Pearce, U17 selected for SA Schools in IPT Tournament.. Sailing: Mr Pet and D Evans (2008 matric) won the L26 Container World Challenge Yacht Race.

23 January 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. RCL Chairman spoke in Assembly. Mr Kershaw spoke on safety and security after a hijacking in Frere Crescent this week. Mr Pinheiro to arrange bus lists. Pupils bringing bikes and cars to school are to hand licences to Mr Rottcher. Mr Kershaw read info from the 'Fast Facts' brochure re Durban 2010 celebrations, and also School Stats from the 2008 School Realities brochure. Mr Kershaw mentioned the Cricket results vs Australia. He also spoke about the Cricket, Swimming and Leadership Course. Mr Kershaw advised the pupils on 'healthy living'.

2 February 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Mr Kershaw reminded pupils that behaviour needs to be of the highest order. Also a reminder that the CTs will be coming up soon. Pupils are not to do their homework at school. Pupils are warned that staff are clamping down on copying/cheating in 2009. SM McIntosh has been selected for the KZN Junior Tennis Squad. G Le Brasse, G Cahill, T Stoltz, J Thomas and D Wood were selected to represent KZN Baseball Association at the Sands of Time Tournament in Gauteng. Cricket results vs Michaelhouse: Won 4 games, drew 3, lost 2, 2 games cancelled because of rain.

6 February 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. S.G.B. Chairman discussed a very exciting issue when visiting the school. Mr Kershaw supports our prefects in their efforts to stop littering. Pupils are asked to report boys who litter so that they can be punished. Boys are reminded that fighting is not a viable solution to conflict. Waterpolo vs Grey College: Won 2 games, lost 4. Squash vs Kearsney; won 24 games, lost 2.

13 February 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Reminder to pupils to be aware of personal hygiene.

Congratulations to all concerned on a successful Information Evening. Mr Kershaw requested support for the Headmasters' Meeting held at Glenwood on 13 Feb. Results: Cricket vs St Charles - Won 12 games, lost 7. Basketball vs Port Shepstone - Lost 2 games. Squash vs Hilton - won 24 games. Durban Central Athletics Trials - 3 U19, 8 U17 and 5 U15 Glenwood pupils were chosen to represent our zone. Interhouse Gala on 18 February. We have a busy sports weekend ahead of us.

16 February 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. The Choir performed in assembly. The Code of Conduct booklets will be available on Tues/Wed and must be signed for. A patient from Entabeni Doctors' Rooms phoned Mr Kershaw to compliment him on Glenwood pupils' excellent manners. Mr Kershaw complimented our Support Staff for having worked all weekend, tidying the school. A reminder that we have our Gala on Tuesday evening and Prizegiving on Friday 20 Feb. Old boy Shaun Malton has been chosen for the SA Rugby U19 Training Squad. C Frost, J Brandon, G Barnard, G Cahill and K Joubert have been chosen for the U18 KZN Sands of Time Baseball Tournament. Waterpolo results vs Maritzburg College: Won 5 games, drew 2, lost 6. Tennis vs Westville: Won 2 games, lost 2. Cricket vs Westville: Won 13 games, lost 12.

23 February 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Singing of School Hymn in Assembly; find words in Code of Conduct booklet. Mr Kershaw thanked all concerned with Prizegiving. Letter of thanks from Director of North Beach Pick n Pay for our boys' help with stock-taking. Mr Kershaw commended S Govender of Grade 10 for returning money that he found. Shaun Malton captained the SA U19 Rugby squad against France on 18 Feb. Kyle Cooper is doing well in the SA U21 Rugby Team. The KZN Youth Orchestra are to have a concert at Roseway Waldorf School on 6 March. Congratulations to S Dlamini and Z Ngobo on being chosen for the KZN U18 Indoor Hockey Team, and congratulations to J Frost, G Grundlingh, R Hetem, G McGregor-Langley and M Robson on being selected to represent KZN Sands of Time U16 KZN Baseball Tournament. T Meadows was placed 4th in the Junior Division and L Mooney 5th in the U16 category of the Midmar Nott's 80km Road Cycle Race.

2 March 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Mr Kershaw mentioned that: the RCL Raffle has holidays and prizes to be won for the person selling the most tickets, also that tatoo's are not allowed to be visible. E. van der Merwe of Grade 9 selected for SA team for 1st African International Taekwon-do Championships. Congratulations to C. Philaretou, J. Thomas and D. Wood on being selected to represent KZN Sands of Time U14 KZN Baseball Tournament. Four of the Mountain Bikers team participated in the Wartburg Classic: M. Weitz (2nd place), C. van Wieringen (4th place), L. Mooney (10th place) and M. van Wieringen (18th place). The dangers of drinking alcohol and driving vehicles which are unlicensed was stressed. Mr East, ex-Principal of Penzance passed away on Thursday last week in England, a memorial service will be held in SA towards the end of March. Debating at St Mary's DSG: results given. Debating took place at St Mary;s DSG against 46 learners from 11 other schools. Grade 11s were entered in this competition with a view to building experience for Nationals in September. Andile Mtshali won a gold medal in the KZN Senior Championships for Long Jump and Triple Jump. M. Hutchings in Grade 12 ended up 8th in Bloem u19 open Squash, J. Kershaw was the Plate Winner and J. Hutton came 9th in the B Section. Cricket 1st and 2nd team matches against Northwood was rained out, 3rd, 4th, 5th teams won against Westville, 6th team against Northwood was rained out as well. Cricket u16B and C teams beat Northwood.

6 March 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Guitar Academy performed the 1968 single ‘Blackbird’.

Four Chess teams entered the Grey College Tournament, Glenwood came 2nd in A Division and tied 7th and 6rh in B Division. Silver medals went to: J. Kupis, S. Govender, D. Sookdeo and B. Buck. 5 Glenwood pupils entered the Ethekwini Open Chess Tournament: Henry Oliver came 14th and Shervaan Govender 20th in the A Section. D. Sookdeo came 2nd, N Maharaj 5th and N Maharaj 23rd in the B Section. V. Naidoo gave feedback on Forum Discussions. Academic results - Dinaledi Schools : Excellent effort by Staff and boys! Basketball teams played Northwood: u15A team lost and B team won, u14A and B teams won. The following athletes were selected to represent Umlazi District at Provincial Athletics Championships: P. Oosthuizen, B. Cooper, T. Trystman, S, Adendorff, A. Mtshali, E. Smith, H. Visagie, K, Lourens, C. Smith, J. Erasmus, C. Swart and C. Vermaak. Control Test programme to have 100% attendance, no absenteeism will be allowed whatsoever. Grade 11 Dance money to be paid as soon as possible. Matthew Richardson sent a report from England.

13 March 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. There are problems with the buses at present. Students need to make a plan. We used to have a parent who looked after our needs but things have changed quite dramatically. Please ensure that you behave at all times! It is important to maintain standards. Extramural activities: commitment needs to be complete season to receive recognition. KZN Interschools Sailing: C. Zimmerman, L. Vogelsang and K. Olsen participated at Midmar. Glenwood was placed 1st in the Laser Standard class. St Annes took the KZN title as their accumulated points were lower than ours. Y. Pillay and S. Sunkari played their 10th game for the 1st Cricket Team and can now receive their caps. u/14 Waterpolo tournament held at Jeppe High: Glenwood came 8th out of the 20 schools participating. 16th March 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Mr Kershaw reminded the boys about humility, compassion and to remember their roots. He encouraged the boys to work hard particularly on their academics to ensure that they can obtain a good qualification! He reminded the students that there are more Control Tests in the last week of the term. C. Gillon and Z. Ntombela have been appointed Acting Prefects from today. There will be a Fundraiser for the Home for the Elderly (279 Manning Road) on Saturday 28th March from 07:00 until 13:00, selling hotdogs and hamburgers. Dianne Smith has volunteered to co-ordinate a lift club from the Hillary area. (Contact nr: 083 659 8529.) R. Myburgh won the u16 Tennis Dunlop Mini Series. Most of the Glenwood teams beat DHS at cricket on Saturday with the exception of the u15B, u14B and u14E teams. Glenwood 1st and 2nd Teams beat Northwood by 9-0 and 5-1 respectively. Mr Kershaw asked the students not to move the furniture in the quads!

20th March 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Mr Pinheiro wished the Matric students a wonderful evening for their Dance on Friday. He mentioned that the Grade 11 Dance, which is a fundraiser to help cover costs for the Matric Dance, had not been very well supported. Hockey and rugby fixtures and practices will continue. HHMI visitor to the school on Thursday was very impressed. The students were encouraged through a few newspaper articles that were read to take responsibility for their learning and be able to take correction without becoming offended. These articles explained that people’s jobs are their real source of financial stability and we are relearning how to create wealth. More Control Tests will take place in the last week of term. Train trips to happen in the Third Term, PPL League for Rugby.
Compliments received from Doctors on students good manners. The behaviour on the buses needs to improve. Extramural check will happen next term. Robert Gibb selected to represent Suncoast Pirates Surf Lifesaving Club at SA Nationals. David Sibbald selected to KZN U15A Tennis team, Jeandre Hoogenbozen U15B Tennis team, tournament to take place in Pretoria in April. Durban Girls’ High School thanked our men for their contribution to the Environmental Club clean up through the Interact Club.

23th March 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. C. Gillon reported on Human Rights Day. The Matric Dance on Friday night went off well, boys very smart and their partners stunning. Thanks extended to all involved in the event. The Form V Dance on Saturday night needs more attendance to make it an even bigger success. Behaviour on Friday afternoon was unacceptable, Mr Pinheiro will deal with students. P. Oosthuizen and A Mtshali were selected to represent KZN at the Athletics National Junior Club Champs in Pretoria, Mtshali also to participate in National Schools Champs. K. Olsen, D. Stopforth and A. Beverley and C Zimmerman were all involved in the NSRI Barrel Race and fundraiser to raise funds for NSRI. T. Meadows and L. Mooney participated in the Mac Donald’s Cycle race in Richards Bay. They will both be taking part in the U16 and Junior Tour in Midmar. Busy weekend coming up with U13 Rugby Festival against Brumbies.

27th March 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. The Testing Programme will take place in the final week. Boys away on “Official” School tours are to see each of their teachers with a note from the Tour Organiser as well as a note from the boys’ parents. An assessed mark will be given. Doctor’s certificate is a requirement for absentees, no write, no marks! All LO assessment will be done on Monday. PE kit is required, incorrect kit will lead to reduced marks. Doctor’s certificate also required for absence! Early closing of school (14h00) on Monday due to Testing Programme arrangements and Staff Training seminar. School will finish by 12:30 on Friday 3 April. Reports will be handed out at registration on the last day. If away, Parents can collect from the Front Office during the holidays. Old Boys continue to do well as academics, Mark Kirby-Hirst, Classics Research Colloquium. Extra lessons for Grades 10 – 12 available at the Learning Centre, Westville. R. Myburgh chosen to represent KZN in SA Inter-Provincial Tennis U18 Team. G. Grundlingh will be participating in the Junior Inter Regional Baseball Tournament in Cape Town.
