Glenwood travel by train to Grey College

Nearly 500 boys, 50 members of Staff and a carriage of Parent Supporters left Durban station for Grey College on Friday afternoon.

A positive air of expectancy was evident on the train and the merry band of travellers made their way through the night to Bloemfontein station.

I met them on the platform and wished them well for the day's activities; too many to mention here but full results will follow. I also enquired of some of the boys and Staff if they had used the room service button in their carriages for their breakfast order of eggs and bacon; they all seemed to have missed seeing that button in their compartments!

I enjoyed wandering around Grey College on Saturday watching the boys at play. I still believe that this must be one of the most enriching experiences of our School's extensive extra-curricular programme and I sincerely hope that it cotinues long into the future.

I like to listen to what the boys have to say and they were all so positive about the experience and that makes me happy. A large number of boys made the trip despite being injured and not able to play; they just wanted to be on the train with their mates.

Well done to all of the Glenwood Staff, particularly Mr Pinheiro and Mr Munro for their organisation of the trip and thanks to the Grey College community for hosting us.

One must be honest and say that the results were disappointing on the day, and careful, considered discussion is already taking place about making all of our activities more competitive, but if we put results aside for even the briefest of moments, the experience of a tour on a train, with your mates, to another part of the Country, must make it all worthwhile.

There are a lot of really sad young men wandering around right now (think of the expectations of our 1st Squash VI and our 1st Rugby XV on Friday of last week) but the mark of a true Glenwood boy is how strongly he is able to bounce back after disappointment and I look forward to the next time that we meet our friends from Bloemfontein at the home of the Green Machine!
