Please find below a report about the recent Festival at Grey College:

Glenwood High School

FNB Grey College Soccer Festival

11 August 2010

The Glenwood High School departed from school to take part in the annual FNB Grey College Soccer Festival. Arguably the top school boys’ soccer festival in the country with the likes of Benoni High, The Glen, HTS Louis Botha, Norkem High, Victoria Park and Westville High all attending the Festival.

We where grouped in Pool 1 along side Benoni, K.E.S, Northwood and Rosina. Looking at all the groups there was no one group that stood out as the so called ‘group of death’ with each group having top, top soccer teams in them.

12 August 2010

Our tournament kicked off against last year's finalists Rosina. Our boys defended for most of the match and if we had converted the few chances we made it would have been a totally different match. At full time the score was 6-0 in favour of Rosina. With the mighty Benoni High next, multiple champions of this tournament, the boys know they would have to dig deep and deep they dug. Holding Benoni 1-1 for most of they match, it took a lapse in concentration by our midfield in the dying minutes of the match for Benoni to find a winner. End score 2-1 Benoni.

13 August 2010

In a must-win match for our boys against traditional rivals Northwood. Our boys showed loads of heart to come back from a 2-0 down to draw the match 3-3. By far the best game of the tournament so far. Our last match in the group stages was K.E.S. In a match filled with loads of controversial referee decisions which even confused our own former top flight referee Terry Ellis. K.E.S were the better team and pushed us aside 4-0. At the end of the group stages we slotted into the Bowl Section of the knock out phases along with fellow KZN side George Campbell and Westville. Mondeor High made up the fourth spot in the section.

14 August 2010

Our only match of the day was the semi-final against George Campbell. In a match that we controlled from start to finish. We ended the match 3-2 winners to put us through to the Bowl Final against Mondeor High who beat Westville in their semi-final, but the day was not over for all the coaches as the traditional 20min one way Coaches match kicked off at 3:30pm. The teams where divided geographically with the Inland coaches playing against the Coastal coaches. With Glenwood being represented by all members of staff on tour. Mr. Howard was striking for Coastal, Mr. Leach in goals and Mr. Ellis put on a ref's clinic. A fun match which ended 4-4 and had to be decided on penalties in the end. 5-4 to Inland after 10 kicks where taken. That evening the boys where in for a treat as Mr. Gavin Hunt (Head Coach of SuperSport United) made the trip down to chat to the boys at the Formal Dinner.

15 August 2010

A much focused Glenwood soccer side took to the field to play Mondeor High School in the final of the Bowl Section. Just like the day before our lads controlled the game from beginning to end and Mondeor where no match for us with all the boys firing and slotting amazing goals. 4-1 the final score. The boys have come away from this tournament having learnt a lot about soccer and having made new friends with boys from the other schools.

Well done to all concerend and thanks to Coaches, Supporters and players. Thanks also to Grey College.
