Mathematical Literacy
This is a fairly new subject introduced by the Department of Education to cater for the weaker learners in the field of mathematics. Prior to this subject we had the Higher and Standard grade determining your ability in pure mathematics. Once these grades were abolished, this gave rise to Mathematical Literacy to fill the gap.
Here at Glenwood High the subject is gaining momentum quickly and our class sets have virtually doubled over the years. What is most pleasing is the number of subject distinctions that we have achieved within this short period of time. Learners who struggle with pure mathematics find much joy with working with this type of everyday mathematics. For the last two years we had the highest number of subject distinctions per capita of students in the Umlazi District. However due to our restricted number of learners that we allow to take this subject we come second to Durban Girls’ High due to their high number of learners doing this subject.
