This year marks the return of the Wildlife society to Glenwood after an absence of a few years. The Wildlife Society consists of 11 committed boys from different grades that share a mutual love and respect for Nature.
Earlier this term we had a number of meetings and well the response of the boys was really encouraging! Then I contacted the museum and organized a talk by DR Peter Taylor who is the museums resident expert in Bats. This happened on Friday afternoon 6th February.
The boys arrived at my classroom after final registration and we headed out with our groups resident expert Mrs. Janice Wright. Thank-you for your support! We headed into town, where Mrs. Wright found parking. We then proceeded into the Museum, which is housed on the second floor of the City Hall. We arrived and the boys were given a worksheet to fill in as the talk progressed by the education officer on duty. Dr Taylor then proceeded to take the boys to the Bat Exhibits and gave them an introductory talk on the various bat species found in Southern Africa. The boys asked some very good questions and he was most impressed.

The boys and myself then thanked Dr Taylor for his time. Dr Taylor also gave me two books on Bat conservation and identification which he has given us permission to copy so that each child can receive his own. The boys later in the term will be attending a bat watch in which the boys must be able to identify local bat species by their body mass and coloring. They will also be trained in using electronic bat detectors to identify the bats flying overhead. This promises to be great fun!
