AIMS
It is essential that each learner who leaves school should leave with some historical knowledge, particularly on understanding of their present situation in relation to their heritage. Moreover, each school leaver should take with them a working grasp of several key skills gained in History: detecting bias, developing empathy, presenting coherent arguments, understanding logic and other reading and writing skills. What is certainly important is that those who take History should learn, but they must also enjoy themselves.
History is a compulsory subject in Grade 9 only, having been replaced by Human and Social Sciences. It is however, an option for subject packages in Grade 10.
It is the intention of the department to allow the learners to experience History as something that is relevant, accessible and valuable for the life-long learning. To this end, the core syllabi one supplemented with extra information, viz a viz videos, slides, research projects, internet and so forth. Extension of the curriculum is provided through video evenings and guest speakers.

HISTORY TOURS
One of the most important aspects of the History year are the annual tours and field-trips.
Tours are offered from Grade 9 to Grade 11; while a tour for Grade 12 is available, depending on interest. Throughout the year, various classes go on field-trips for a day.
The benefits of actually experiencing History are great. Learners are able to empathise more and are able to visualise the experiences of time.

HISTORY FIELD TRIPS
In many instances, it is not always possible to "overnight", particularly when the implications are considered. So, the day trip also becomes a viable option to stimulate interest in History.
