The JSE and Universities Challenge, held in association with Liberty Life and Standard Bank, is an annual securities-trading competition. Competitors are grouped into teams of 4 members, each team is given R1 000 000 in “fake” money. The main objective of the game is to buy and sell shares and securities on the Johannesburg Securities Exchange and at the end of the competition, to make the most profits.
The Glenwood High School team consisted of Ahmed Seedat, Timothy Miller, Travis Venter and Jarred Rai. We called ourselves “Team Alpha”.
It was a great achievement to have been placed 5th in the Equity Game in South Africa, competing against approximately 300 other schools. Glenwood was the only school in the KZN province to have been placed in the competition.
Team Alpha were chaperoned by Ms Adams, to Johannesburg to attend the prize giving and luncheon at the JSE is Sandown. Each team member and the school, were given R1 000 Sastrix shares. In addition we were also all given a 1GB flash disk, am MP3 player, magazines and books.
It was an amazing experience to be seated in the “Economic Powerhouse” of our country. In addition to meeting the CEO of the JSE, we also met many other top businessmen, including Siyabonga Mapoku. We all received a personalized copy of his latest book, “Conversations with JSE Altx Entrepreneurs”.
The JSE Schools Challenge is an excellent opportunity for the students to experience the rush of the exchange, as well as giving them a good grounding in the world of business. We look forward to entering as many teams as possible next year and sincerely hope that we take a few steps up the podium.
