GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL : PARENTS' ASSEMBLY : TERM 4 2008

6 October 2008: Special Teachers' Day Assembly taken by the boys in honour of World Teachers' Day on 5 October. J Moodley spoke about teachers. SGB Chairman, Mr Knipe, spoke about our special guests, the SGB Members. Mr Kershaw stressed that Reading is Relevant. Staff and pupils welcomed back to final quarter. Mr Arthur Huber's 50 years of Service to Teaching was recognised. Mr Blamey and Ms Jones welcomed to our Staff. Our Headboy thanked SGB members for attending assembly. He also reminded Matrics of the hard work ahead. Extra lessons and remedial lessons to be followed. Attend school! Matrics reminded to be on best behaviour. Speech Night on 29.10.2008. Bell ringing ceremony. No early closing of school at the end of this year as matric marking to take place during holidays. Report back by C Gillon and TK Ngcobo on Gr 11 Leadership Course. Neatness check today. Results of holiday activities, Waterpolo in Cape Town and Cricket in Pietermaritzburg, to be advertised later. Cricket this Saturday vs Kearsney; Waterpolo vs Northwood.

10 October 2008: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Pupils reminded to maintain academic commitment. No marks for unsubmitted CASS Assignments. No study leave for Matrics as they are being taught. Closing date for the Raffle Sheets is end of October. Alan Zungu attained highest Maths mark at Spring School. Congratulations to M Schoeman and N Ncube who are into the final interviews at the Alan Gray Foundation. Mark Schoeman and Javan Moodley were selected for the KZN Schools Debating Association Team and Keagan Pretorius was ranked 10th out of all debaters there. Three U19 and one U17 Glenwood pupils were selected for the KZN High Schools Cricket teams to play at the National Weeks in December 2008. DA Leadership opportunities available for pupils to apply online. Z Ntombela contacted us from Denmark - has settled and is enjoying himself. Reminder about protocol for sport over the weekend.

17 October 2008: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Reports to parents. The LIFO Manual to go with reports. First Aid Certificates were handed to relevant pupils. I.T. Seminar taking place; pupils asked to stay away from the hall. Results: Squash - School Champs for 2008 announced; Gibson won Inter-house Squash; Cricket vs Kearsney - won 7 games, lost 7; Waterpolo vs Northwood - won 4 games, lost 1. 4 Glenwood pupils chosen for the D & D Table Tennis ZNN Trials.

20 October 2008: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Mr Kershaw advised pupils to use sunscreen and hats. Reminder of correct behaviour at all times. All matrics to attend Speech Night. Testimonials will be suspended unless Mr Pinheiro is advised of a valid reason for absenteeism. Grade 11s will attend function to support Matrics. Mr Oberholzer to attend. Cricketers to maintain good behaviour at all times. Of the 6 positions up for selection in D & D Table Tennis, 4 Glenwood pupils were chosen. M van Weiringen participated in the KZN Invitation Team at the 2008 SA Junior Fly Fishing Nationals. Congratulations to the Top 5 pupils in each grade for Term 3 2008. Results: Cricket vs DHS - Won 4 games, lost 2. Waterpolo - 1sts finished 8th, U15A 3rd.

24 October 2008: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Mrs Barnes spoke to Matrics re final exams. Senior Prizegiving to be held on 29 October. The whole school was requested to focus on end of year exams. Results of Toastmasters Semi-finals: Ruan Grobler came 2nd in Prepared Speech and 1st in the Impromptu; Kyle Pillay came 2nd in the Evaluator's Round. Our Interact boys collected 41 full bags of garbage at the Mangrove Swamp clean-up. The LO Manuals and Homework diaries will be sold for R90. The draw for the Laptop Raffle will take place on 31 Oct. Subject changes will only happen at beginning of year. Basketball fixtures vs DHS; Cricket vs Maritzburg College.

31 October 2008: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Ahmed Seedat gave a report-back on the JSE Challenge. Certificates were awarded to A Mfeka and R Ramlal in the World Knowledge Olympiad. The SKZN Bodyboarding Champs to be held on 2 Nov. Today is our fundraiser Golf Day. Waterpolo vs DHS; Cricket vs College, Kearsney, Kloof + Pinetown. Rugby 7's team finals. Sports Banquet held on 30 Oct. Senior Speechnight held on 29 Oct. Pupils to stay away from the Hall while the Matrics write exams. Internal exams starting soon.

3 November 2008: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Raffle to be drawn on Wednesday as some forms are still outstanding. Surfers gave a report-back of their tour. Results: Cricket - Glenwood won 6 games and lost 2. Basketball - won 1, lost 4. Waterpolo - won 7, lost 2, drew 1. Sevens Rugby Report - won 4, lost 1, ranked 3rd in SA.

7 November 2008: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Matric exams are now in progress. All pupils to wear uniform and blazers to be worn every day of the week. Change into uniforms after sport. Prepare for up-coming exams. Mitchell Windt won the Term 4 Fundraising Raffle. S Bissoon, Y Moonsamy and W Allen qualified for their 1st XI Caps. Cricket vs St Charles and others. Waterpolo vs Maritzburg College.

10 November 2008: Assembly opened with silent prayer and reading. Well done to TK Ngcobo who has been chosen as Chairman of the RCL for 2009. Procedures for 2009 Prefects discussed. Budget Meeting at 17:30 on 12 November in MT Pavilion. Please return letter from pupils not returning to Glenwood in 2009. Reminder to pay R90 for the 2009 LO Diaries. Any queries re Waltons Stationery Orders please see Mrs Criticos. School may have to close a couple of days earlier than expected due to Matric Marking. Pupils told to work with Teachers in the exam preparation. Most important that pupils return books. Results: Waterpolo vs College - Won 0 games, drew 1 game, lost 6 games. Cricket vs St Charles - Won 5 games, rain stopped play for 4th XI. No other matches were played because of the weather.

28 November 2008: Colin Richmond did the reading on Christmas. Mr Kershaw, who is a special guest at a Speech Day down the South Coast, and Mr Pinheiro, who is attending a Matric Marking meeting, both wish you everything of the best for the Festive Season. A letter re end of year arrangements has been emailed and placed on the web page. Gr 10 Spirit of Adventure Certificates and Gr 11 Leadership Certificates and Smile Certificates will be handed out in 2009. Farewell to Mr Huber after 50 years of teaching. Emails were received from Kyle van Deventer and Ettiene Beneke as their stay in the UK come to an end. Congrats to Brendon Carolan on his appointment as an U18 Hockey SA Schools Selector. Tyne van der Merwe placed 3rd in the KZN School Championships for 2008. Matrics write final exam on 3 Dec 2008. Mrs Barnes bade farewell to staff leaving Glenwood. Shaun Malton is one of 4 finalists in the Daily News Spar Sportsmen/women of the year. 2009 Prefects were announced. Enjoy the break with family and friends.
