Soccer World Cup 2010 - Schools' Tournament

The Swiss ambassador, Mr Rudolph Baerfuss, visited Glenwood last week to establish ties with Glenwood, as our school was drawn to represent the Swiss side for the Mini World Cup.

Mr  Baersulls presented us with a brochure which contained information about our twin country. We had done a little research before he arrived and were able to put up a display in the library to show the boys that there is more to Switzerland than good chocolate! Switzerland is synonymous with quality and precision and some of the finest equipment is manufactured in this small, land-locked country which is bordered by Italy, Germany and France. Bicycle parts, orthopedic equipment, pharmaceuticals, computer parts and watches are just some of the exports the world has come to trust when the stamp ‘Swiss made’ is embossed on the product

Glenwood is proud to be associated with Switzerland and we look forward to representing them at the tournament when our school team takes part in the Mini World Cup later this month wearing the official Swiss kit sponsored by Puma. We will, of course, be supporting Switzerland when they take on Spain at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in June.

Hockey vs Northwood & Port Shepstone

The Glenwood 1st XV produced some good play to win their first encounter of the Night League at Queensmead on Friday night. They played Port Shepstone and won 7-0.

On Saturday, the Glenwood 1st XI played well against a strong Northwood team to win 3-0.

Glenwood Captain and SA U17 Captain, Sunkari, was outstanding despite picking up a yellow card. He is easily Glenwood's best player in recent years.

Rugby vs Voortrekker/Pinetown/College

The Glenwood 1st XV showed moments of brilliance against a game Voortrekker 1st XV to produce a 73-5 victory for Glenwood.

The Green Machine has had its first run and the machine seems to not be too rusty. Glenwood played Voortrekker this weekend and it was great to see all the Glenwood boys out on the fields again.

The first team started slowly as expected for the first game in months but soon gained momentum against a spirited Voortrekker side that threw their bodies into every tackle. Shaun Adendorff opened the scoring for the Green Machine with a well-worked short side try in the corner in front of a vocal Glenwood crowd. The Glenwood 1st XV ran some great angles and it was good to see the flow of play. Four more tries followed before the end of the first half and one of those went to debutant loose head prop, Jarryd Terblanche who had a stormer of a first game in green. The half time score was 33-0 to Glenwood.

The second half was scrappy at the best of times but still delivered spurts of great rugby from Glenwood and they scored a further 7 tries. One of the best tries of the day went to outside centre Mondli Ntshingila as he fielded a quick kick-off from Voortrekker on the opposite side to where the forwards were lining up. Mondli stepped the first line of defence before setting off down the touch line, stepping inside to avoid the cover defence before diving over under the poles for a brilliant individual effort. At the final whistle Glenwood had scored 12 tries and another debutant, Siyabonga Tom, converted 10 of the 12 tries; well done Tom! Thank you to Voortrekker once again for the game and the great spirit in which it was played.

There is still much work to do before the 1st XV take on St. Andrews at the Grahamstown Festival this Saturday and then DaleCollege at Dale on Monday the 22nd of March. It was great to see all the support over the weekend and well done to all the Glenwood teams that played a great brand of Rugby, well done coaches!
