GLENWOODHIGH SCHOOL: PARENTS' ASSEMBLY : TERM 2 2009

 

15 April 2009: Assembly was opened with silent prayer and a reading. The boys were welcomed back for Term 2. The Headmaster welcomed Mrs Rottcher back to the staff. Very busy term so need to remain committed to sport activities and academics. Very important term for Matrics who start applying for University entrance. No late coming or absenteeism! Sport: check bulletin, coaches and Term Calendar for planning with Parents.

Results:

Ben vd Merwe participated in the SA 1st African Open Tae Kwon-do Championship and received a silver medal in sparring. Josh Smit and Luke Mc Cracken took part in the KZNSA Surfing Trials, Josh came 1st in the first two rounds and Luke 2nd and 5th in the same rounds. The 1st XI Hockey had a very successful tour to Pretoria Boys High for the NOMADS Tournament, they drew 3 and lost 2 of their games against top opposition in the country!   The1st XI Rugby won two of their matches and lost one at the St John’s Easter Festival. 12 Glenwood pupils represented KZN in the Baseball Inter-Regional Tournament in Durbanville, Cape Town, the u14 team was placed 2nd and the u16 team 1st being unbeaten.   Ronnie Myburgh and Sean Mc Intosh were selected for the SA Schools’ U15A Tennis side, Daniel Sibbald was reserve for the same team. The World Schools’ Tournament will be held in France later this year.

20 April 2009: Assembly was opened with silent prayer and a reading. The Environmental Committee gave their report. The students were reminded about voting on Wednesday. There will be a New Parents’ Evening on Thursday. Carl Zimmerman crewed in the Dart Provincials as part of Point Yacht Club’s Easter Regatta and was placed 5th in the race. Our Chess team played Westville and won 10-0. Jason Zimmerman, Ahmed Seedat and Henry Janse van Vuuren were selected to perform in Young Performers in “Huckleberry Fin” or “BigRiver” in June. Rugby teams did well against Richards Bay/Empangeni and George Campbell (all results on the website).  1st Volleyball Team played Westville on Saturday and won both games. Glenwood won KZN Top Schools’ Squash Tournament for the 10th time since 1996 (out of 14 years) – great achievement!

4 May 2009: Assembly was opened with silent prayer, the School song and a reading. Mr Kershaw stressed that absence without a Doctor’s Certificate is ‘0’ for a Test. Grade 11 students presented talks on Freedom Day and Workers’ Day. It is the boy’s responsibility to ensure that a Teacher has a copy of the Doctor’s Certificate. It is too late once the marks are submitted. Mr Kershaw warned the boys that their work ethic needs to improve if they are going to be successful at the year-end. There are no Matric repeats if you fail. There have been no changes to re-marks/ re-checks from 2008 exams. CASS mark / Assignments / PATs are crucial and students are to ensure that they are always up to date! Greetings and behaviour must be of the highest order at all times. The learning process is not be disrupted or the boy will be placed in Time-Out Detention. The Grade 11 Parents’ Evening is to take place this week in the Hall for a short talk and continue in the classrooms. Boys are encouraged to make use of extra lessons available for all Grades. Z. Ntombela and C. Gillon were appointed as full Prefects. Our Chess teams beat CliftonCollege by 8½ - 1½ and RidgePark by 10-0. The 1st Badminton team lost 0-8 to Westville Boys. Target shooting teams shot against College: results were: M. Carlitz – 3rd, L. Teixeira – 4th in U21 Sporter section, M. Templeton – 1st, R. Gibb – 2nd and D. Stopforth – 3rd in U21 Springer section, D. Gordon – 1st, M. Smook – 4th in the U16 Springer section and S. Kerr – 1st and C. Demner – 2nd in the U13 Springer section. Rugby 1st XV in Japan are into the semi-finals to be played tomorrow!

7 May 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and a reading. Boys were requested to bring their Assembly books next week as singing will start. Extra books, if lost, will be available from the Finance Office. There are lots of activities this weekend. Full school uniform and correct kit is essential. Sportsmanship vital at all times! 1st XV Rugby will be back today and playing KearsneyCollege tomorrow. Theodore Roosevelt was quoted. The Tennis Team is in Johannesburg for the Wayne Ferreira National Tournament. Results will become available. Predict-A-Score will help for Train Trips. Our Badminton A team beat Northwood 7-1 and our B team drew 4-4. Control Tests start in 3 weeks time (1 June). Please develop a good work ethic and put much effort into your academics. Boys were reminded about The Leadership courses reply slips as well as the Work Experience slips that need to be returned. There will be Cross Country as an LO Practical Assessment on Wednesday. Boys were reminded of the Mothers’ Day Breakfast on Saturday morning.

11 May 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer. Mr vd Ahee was remembered, he passed away over the weekend. His family are in our prayers and thoughts. A reading followed. The Headmaster placed emphasis on boys’ work ethic leading up to the Control Tests in 3 weeks time. Extra work is expected from all, make use of extra lessons on offer. Gregg Louw of Gr 11A gave a report back on the TADA Conference which took place on 8th May. The 1st XV Rugby Team reported on their Overseas Tour to Japan. We played Chess against DHS on Friday and won 7-3. Travis Meadows and Liam Mooney took part in the KZN Cycling Champs Time Trial and Road Race. They both received bronze medals in their respective categories. Lyall Lloyd-Evans (Interact President), Regem Marx, Shaun Hucklesby, Sean Williamson, Mandandi Mukwena, Ithumeleng Mokganya, Ryan Miller, Jason Soobramoney, Jaun Muine, Juan-Luke Regaud performed 50+ hours of service for the Interact Club and earned their Rotary Interact Service Badges. The captain of the Badminton for this year is Juandrè Booyse of Gr 11. Our 1st Tennis team competed in Johannesburg in the Wayne Ferreira Tennis Tournament. They played 5 matches, won 3 and ended up in 5th position out of 15 schools. The team won the Spirit of Sportsmanship Team Trophy. The Headmaster encouraged the students to make use of the Predict-a-score Self-help scheme for the train trips. Rugby vs Kearsney : won 13 and lost 5. Hockey vs Kearsney: won 2 and lost 7. Volleyball (Westville League) : won 2 and lost 3.

15 May 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and a reading. Mr Kershaw stressed the importance of correct behaviour this weekend. Next Friday evening against DHS compulsory for Grade 8 and 9, all other boys who come to watch are to be in uniform and seated with boys. School closes early on Friday (13h00). There will be transport available. The Gr 8A and B Forum Discussion Teams participated in their round at DurbanNorthCollege on Tuesday. M. van Niekerk of Grade 8A was awarded the Best Chairman of the Evening Award. Michael Elion, Jason Dames, Calven Clack and Gareth le Roux took part in the Discovery Mens Health Surfski series, the first 3 boys got a C grade and Gareth was 1st in the Junior Over the Short course and 6th overall. Old Boys Day is on 30 May. Matric entries need to be filled in.

20 May 2009: Prefects’ Assembly. The boys are not to walk home in tracksuits but are to shower and put on their uniform. There is a compulsory at DHS on Friday evening for Gr 8 and 9 students. All other boys who attend the compulsory at DHS must be in uniform and must sit with the rest of the School. Gibson boys will also be attending. The Prefects will deal with discipline. Glenwood boys will sit where we usually sit and SAPS personnel will be on duty. Buses will travel to and from Glenwood. Arrangements need to be made if this service is needed. Do not hang around in the street after the match, leave as soon as dismissed by Prefects. Do not run onto the field at any time! Do not react if provoked and talk to a staff member of Prefect or SAPS Personnel. Do not get involved with badly behaved Old Boys of either school. Stay together at all times. There is compulsory Hockey @ Queensmead on Friday evening for all hockey players. Glenwood will play DHS in boys’ night league final. Neatness is essential at all times. Manners, humility, greetings and standing are very important.

22 May 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and a reading. Mr Kershaw encouraged the boys to believe in themselves without being arrogant. The Glenwood website has had 1,05 million hits from external sources. KZN had 1658 marking centres for the marking of Grade 12 scripts. There were 151817 registered candidates for the exam. 20 million A4 pages were copied – that is 133333 per day for 5 months or 222222 per day for 3 months. Mr Kershaw commended the Gr 10’s on their Artwork in the Library which makes a statement and indicates that some genuine research was done for these projects. Glenwood entered a Grade 12 team consisting of R. Ramlal, M. Iyavoo and K. Bisseru in the Regional Mintek Quiz and we were placed 3rd in the First Round of the competition, 4th in the 2nd Round. K. Bisseru was placed 3rd and R. Ramlal 4th in the Individual section. K. Bisseru will be representing KZN at the National Finals in July. Mr Kershaw stressed that Detention takes priority over other extramurals. No tracksuits to be worn whilst walking home. He stressed the moral issue of cheating, also that boys not at school on Friday cannot play matches on Saturday. Boys absent from school must catch up with their work. Daniel Marques of Grade 12 and his partner took part in the Freedom Cup Latin and Ballroom Dance Competition and came first in both the Ballroom and Latin Beginners sections.  B. Kenton and A. van der Merwe received a Silver Medal for Free Sparring and a Bronze Medal respectively for Free Sparring in the South African leg of the ‘World Funakoshi-Shotokan Friendship Championships”.

25 May 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and a reading. A report back on JSE Schools’ Challenge was given by J. Booyse. Old Boys’ Day on Saturday is compulsory. There will be a R10 entry fee to cover costs of security and help with outreach. There will also be a draw for a cell phone. The boys were encouraged to visit the Art Exhibition and Natural Science Museum right on their doorstep. Controlled Tests officially start on Monday 1 June 2009. C. Zimmerman sailed The Bar Anniversage Mug and came first in the race. Glenwood 1st Badminton team played New Forrest 1st and won 8-0, the 3rd team played Kuswag 2nd team and lost 1-7. J. Booyse played in the Pretoria u19 open and reached the singles and doubles plate finals. Our hockey 1st team played DHS on Wednesday evening and lost 1-2, however Glenwood beat DHS 5-3 in the final of the night league. Rugby results against DHS: Glenwood won 15 of their games and lost 1.

29 May 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and a reading. The Old Boys’ Weekend starts with a dinner in the Hall on Friday night. Boys are to stand for the Last Post and Reveille on Saturday but must not stop playing rugby. Security will be tight all weekend and visitors were warned against using alcohol. Glenwood’s Senior and Junior Debating teams competed against Maris Stella’s teams at DurbanGirlsHigh School. Our Senior team won with Keegan Pretorius obtaining the Best Speaker award. Our choir won the High School section of the Mc Donald’s Pinetown Choir Competition.

8 June 2009: Assembly opened with silent prayer and a reading. Control Tests are over and Teachers are getting marks together. Reports will be handed out at the end of the Term. There will be Standardised Tests in the last week of Term from Monday to Friday. No special arrangements allowed but Doctor’s Certificate or ‘0’ for Standardised Tests. There will be Education Department exam papers coming to the Senior boys over the next few weeks. Use them very carefully! School will close early this Friday and Wednesday 3rd lesson will be Friday 6th lesson. Staff will be entering marks and training of Edu Admin. The Boarding Establishment has a compulsory Free Weekend. The Matric Quad is being cleaned at the moment, do not move benches/ tables around or throw rubbish around. Ben vd Merwe participated in the 8th Annual Invitational ATC Tae Kwon-do tournament in Pretoria and received two gold medals. He was also awarded the floating trophy for “Best Junior Male of the tournament”. He has been nominated as a potential candidate for the “Junior and veteran World Championships”. The 1st and 2nd Tennis team played Clifton on Saturday and the 1st team won 5-4 and the 2nd team lost 0-9. The U15 and U17 boys won the Cross Country Race. Rugby results: We won 8 games, lost 14 and drew 1 against College on Saturday. Our hockey teams played 10 games and lost 10. Squash teams won 3 and lost 5, Badminton drew 1 and lost 2. Jason Zimmerman and A. Seedat performed in the production of Huckleberry Finn in July. Dane Morel gave feed back on the excursion to the KZNSA Arts excursion.

12 June 2009: Assembly was opened with silent prayer and a reading. The Matrics were reminded of the Parents’ Evening next Wednesday at 17h30. The CASS is an unacceptable situation. There will be a compulsory next Saturday against Westville. The game will be early to enable people to get to the 1st Test vs Lions. Mr Kershaw reminded the students that Monday and Tuesday are holidays. Boys are to leave at 13h00 today. There is a busy weekend ahead with U13 Craven Week Rugby and Monday U16 + U18 from 09h30. Mr Kershaw wished the Glenwood players all the best of luck! Bullying in the school is totally unacceptable, boys will be punished! The Badminton C side played Hillcrest A and we lost 3-5, our B side played Westville B and lost 2-6. The U19 volleyball team narrowly lost the opening pre-season tournament against Westville Boys, but they have won every league match throughout the rest of the season.    The team played Kingsway 1st and won 21-4. The Glenwood U19 Team won the Westville Invitational Tournament.

19 June 2009: Assembly was opened with silent prayer and a reading. The boys sang the National Anthem and V Naidoo gave a talk on Youth Day. Boys were asked not to damage property around the school, if they are caught they will have to pay. Mr Kershaw congratulated the KZNRU Representatives mentioning that there will be a Capping ceremony on Monday evening. He also congratulated the KZN Hockey representatives as well as the KZN Squash representatives on their achievements. There is an excellent article on Glenwood experience at: joe-williams.livejournal.com. Carl du Plessis, a past student who relocated in 2008 mentioned that he misses Glenwood and congratulated the school on its achievements. Avikar Oodit will be undertaking his Shodan (1st Dan) Black Belt examination in Locarno, Switzerland in July this year.

22 June 2009: Assembly was opened with silent prayer, the singing of a school hymn and a reading. Mr Kershaw encouraged the boys to “Do everything will all your might” from a Daily News article of 18/6/09. K. Olsen, D. Stopforth and L. Vogelsang sailed in the J22 Youth Nationals. Our 1st Badminton Team beat Kingsway 1st team by 7-1. Rugby results against Westville this weekend: we won 16 games, lost 6 and drew 1. Our hockey teams won 2 games, lost 5 and drew 1. The 1st team Tennis won all their games, 2nd team lost 4-5, 3rd team won 7-2 and the 4th team won 5-4. Glenwood’s U19A Squash team beat Philadelphia (USA) U19A in all their matches. N. Grobler, S. Skhosana, G. Radford share R1 200 prize money for predicting the closest scores for the game against Westville. D. Jean-Louis wins R50 for selling the winning ticket. Kyle Cooper played SA U20 Rugby on Sunday.
