J22 Youth Nationals - Hartbeespoort Dam - 12 to 16 June 2010

On Friday 11 June 2010, Keegan Olsen (skipper), Dylan Stopforth and Bernard Bussy travelled with Mr Pet to Hartbeespoort Dam in a Nissan Livinia sponsored by Imperial Nissan to participate in the 2010 J22 Youth Nationals.  This regatta has been held for the past 16 years and this is the 6th time that the Glenwood boys have represented Point Yacht Club.  After preparing the boat on Saturday morning, the first four races were held.  Sailing on Schmetterling the boys made a promising start. However the switching winds over the next few days saw many changes in position during the racing and local knowledge definitely helped.

The fourth day of the regatta was lost due to the strong winds accompanying the cold front which passed over the country and the crew were taken to the local animal park for an educational experience where they watched seals being trained, rehabilitated penguins being fed and the park owner show the size of a pelican's beak which can hold up to 4 kg of fish.  The highlight was to hold a 3 month old Nile crocodile and feel its strength.

All in all 15 races were completed.  Although the team did score a few 3rd and 4th places, they did not finish in the points but did learn a great deal about sailing in light conditions and enjoyed the experience and made numerous new friends.
