Cricket – 22nd Oct 2011

The Glenwood 1st XI cricket hosted Maritzburg College on their main oval, Dixons. Both schools have produced some exciting, attacking cricket this year. The green machine has managed to manufacture a run of good form lately and was hoping to maintain that form against College.

On a hot and humid Durban day, captain Subrayen won the toss and elected to bowl. With both opening bowlers in Mthinkhulu and Langley showing good form, the team was upbeat about restricting College to a reasonable total.

The College opening batsmen showed their intent up front, latching onto anything wide of the stumps and punishing any loose deliveries. They managed to score fairly quickly and saw off the Glenwood openers. However, with the score on 43, Javier Frost eventually struck for the home side, breaking the run flow and helping to bring the run rate down. Although none of the Glenwood bowlers took more than 2 wickets, it was their disciplined line and length that kept the College batsmen at bay. In particular, Mthimkhulu, Ramsaroop and Subrayen bowled with accuracy and consistency and all had economy rates under 4 to the over. College managed to hold their innings together well and finished off on 224 for the loss of 6 wickets.

Just like the previous week against DHS, Frost and Ramsaroop opened the Glenwood innings and settled into a comfortable rhythm of picking off the quick singles whilst dispatching the poor deliveries to the boundary. It was a masterful opening partnership of 116 runs that set the platform for the top order batsmen that followed. Frost eventually departed having contributed 42. Captain Subrayen unfortunately wasn’t at the crease for very long but vice-captain Grove Venter went on to play an inspired innings that played a big role in helping Glenwood to eclipse the College target with only 6 wickets down and only 2 overs left to be bowled. Ramsaroop finished on a well played 74 and Venter remained undefeated on 59 off only 57 balls.

The 4 wicket victory over College is one of a number of good team performances Glenwood has managed to produce over the past few years and the entire Glenwood 1st XI can feel proud of their fine achievement. This will hopefully serve as the catalyst to show the boys that they have the talent and ability to compete at the top levels and be successful.

Glenwood will host Northwood next week and look forward to the return fixture after taking the spoils in the first term.

Well done gents!
