The Glenwood 1st XI cricket team travelled up to the Midlands to play Michaelhouse in the picturesque surroundings of Balgowan. In what initially was an overcast and dreary day, the fixture was played under sunny conditions on a beautiful summer’s day.
The Michaelhouse captain won the toss and surprisingly (for Glenwood) chose to bat on a green, lush table. Both Glenwood opening bowlers were more than happy to accept the ball and have a bowl at the Michaelhouse batsmen. Byron Langley and Sibonelo Mthimkhulu troubled the opening pair of Anderson and Stephen consistently. The ball passed the outside of the bat on numerous occasions and the short, sharp bouncers proved difficult on the green pitch. It was eventually Stephen who lost his wicket to a quick bouncer from Langley, skiing the ball to third man to allow Gareth Wissing to take a simple catch. Oldfield joined Anderson but was unable to mount a meaningful score. Wickets fell freely, preventing any solid partnerships. The Michaelhouse batsmen failed to deal with the pace of Langley upfront or with the spin from Glenwood captain Prenelan Subrayen and Mishkal Ramsaroop. Javier Frost and Callan Pearce both contributed with the ball but it was Ramsaroop with figures of 8 overs, 4 wickets for 18 runs and Subrayen with 8 overs, 1 wicket for 15 runs who spun their magic and supported paceman Langley who himself returned impressive figures of 6 overs for 6 runs capturing 1 wicket. Michaelhouse were dismissed for a mere 97 runs off 37 overs.
Ramsaroop and Frost opened the Glenwood innings and were soon in difficulty when Ramsaroop was sent packing on the second delivery for a duck. Rishen Ramlugan joined Frost and put on 23 runs before Frost edged a delivery to the slip cordon. Richard Wissing walked to the crease and put on 32 with Ramlugan before Ramlugan was sent packing and Glenwood started to look a little worried. Subrayen didn’t trouble the scorers at all, making the second duck of the Glenwood innings and bringing Grove Venter to the crease. Needing less than 30 runs to win, Wissing was dismissed for 25 whilst brother Gareth Wissing and Pearce both were cheaply dismissed for ducks, bringing the total tally of ducks to four for the Glenwood innings. Langley joined Venter and the two batted sensibly to finish the game off for Glenwood. Venter’s innings included two massive sixes that hit the tall coniferous trees surrounding the boundary (one in particular is the biggest I’ve seen by any school boy). Venter finished off with a disciplined 31 not out off 28 balls clinching the victory by 3 wickets.
In a game that where Glenwood made heavy going of the victory, they must be complimented on a fine fielding performance with all the bowlers returning impressive figures and ultimately setting up the victory with the ball.
Glenwood face Kearsney next weekend at Kearsney and we look forward to yet another competitive fixture.
