HOCKEY vs WESTVILLE
On Friday evening the Glenwood 1st hockey XI travelled to Westville to play against Westville Boys’ High. After Glenwood’s emphatic victory over DHS in the opening encounter of the Night League the preceding Wednesday, the Glenwood unit were fired up to replicate their earlier performance.
The 1st XI was extremely motivated before the game to play attractive, disciplined hockey and were equally determined that their desire to win translated into a positive outcome. It was a frenetic start to the game with both sides defence resolute and unforgiving. The midfield battle was quick and skillful but it was Glenwood’s attacking move down the right flank that resulted in the first goal. Jason Reed threw an overhead pass to James Dellis who weaved his way into the middle of the field and then laid off a pass to Dayne Naidoo who in turn passed the ball into the “D” to Andile Phehlukwayo. Phehlukwayo’s shot rebounded off the Westville keeper but Naidoo followed up and back-sticked the ball into the net, giving Glenwood an early lead.
The early goal kicked the Westville team into action and their “direct route to goal” approach put the Glenwood defense under tremendous pressure. In the 17th minute Westville won themselves a short corner and their short corner unit made the best of their opportunity. Glenwood debutant keeper, Michael Labuschagne, pulled off a two-handed glove save to keep Glenwood in the lead. Westville were persistent and forced Glenwood to play the majority of their hockey in their own 25m. Close to the half time whistle, an dubious penalty flick was awarded to Westville when Keegan Hezlett tackled a Westville player just inside the “D”. Westville converted the penalty and the scores remained 1-1 at half time.
The second half was a far better performance by Glenwood. They were able to channel their passion in a more constructive way and dominated possession and play for large periods of play. Westville were awarded another short corner and this time they were able to make it count as defender Callan Pearce stepped in front of keeper Labuschagne and unluckily deflected the ball into his own net. 2-1 to Westville. From here on in, it was all way one way traffic as Glenwood showed their true “never say die” attitude and completely dominated proceedings.
A brilliant run from the Glenwood strikers, who capitalised on a Westville mistake, saw Daniel Sibbald intercept a pass and distribute the ball to Phehlukwayo. He, in turn, ran at the Westville keeper then passed to Naidoo who drew the keeper and returned the pass to Phehlukwayo who finished the movement off and equalized at 2-2. The game was equally balanced and ultimately came down to which team wanted it more. With captain Sibbald and Jeandre Hoogenboezem working tirelessly throughout the entire game both in defense and attack, they were able to turn ball over quickly and place Glenwood on the front foot. With 12 minutes to go, James Dellis and Dayne Naidoo combined brilliantly together to move the ball around and finally lay it off to Phehlukwayo, who converted his second of the evening and put Glenwood ahead at 3-2. A really good team effort.
Westville threw everything at the Glenwood boys and although they did penetrate the defense once or twice, they were unable to convert their opportunities. Keeper Labuschagne pulled off the save of the game with 4 minutes left and this seemed to seal Westville’s fate.
When the final whistle blew, Glenwood walked off deserved 3-2 winners. This was a total team effort and showed the true Glenwood spirit of “stand back for none”.
We would like to thank the Westville Staff and players for their role in contributing to a wonderful night of hockey.
Glenwood faces Michaelhouse at home on Saturday.
We look forward to your support at the Three Schools’ Trust Astro.

Genral report:
The Glenwood 1st XI Hockey Team enjoyed an excellent win against a strong Westville XI on Friday at Westville. The Westville XI has been identified as one of the stronger Teams in KZN this year. The Glenwood 1st XI were, however, not intimidated by this and produced an excellent high-energy perfromance to run the Westville team off their feet and win the game 3-2. Well done to the Glenwood Team and Coaches for an outstanding performance to show that the Glenwood 1st XI can be just as strong as in 2011.
The 2012 XI also won their opening Night League match at Kearsney this past week. DHS were on the receiving end of a 1-6 defeat at the hands of the Glenwood 1st XI.
The Glenwood Tennis set up also enjoyed comprehensive wins over Westville this weekend. The 1st Team had an easy win this time and the 2nd Team and 3rd Team also enjoyed good wins. Well done to all concerned. This was also achieved without Tennis Captain, Ronnie Myburgh whom was away at a National Tournament this weekend.
The rugby at Westville was a little tougher and it is unfortunate that this was Glenwood's first outing this weekend and you could see the rustiness and nervousness. The 1st XV looked great on attack but just seemed to lose the final finishing touches tothe many moves they crrated. The disruption created by Westville certainly played into the Westville hands and it is unfortunate that this situation occured. This Glenwood Team will produce excellent rugby this year as they get further into the season.
What a wonderful display of sporting commitment this weekend.
