McCabes House is named after Private Arthur Basil McCabe.
Of Irish descent, Basil McCabe attended Addington Primary School before enrolling at the Day Continuation School in 1912. A member of the South African Infantry, service number 5440, Basil was wounded at Bernafay Wood on 14 July 1916 when a high explosive shell blew off his arm. Although immediately transported to the No 5 Casualty Clearing station at Corbie, 21km behind the front line, doctors were unable to save his life and he died the following day. Basil is buried in Corbie Communal Cemetery. He was just 19 years old.
