We salute 𝐈𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨𝐧 for her lifetime of service to Glenwood High School.
Irene started at Glenwood in January 1993 and served under four Headmasters – Mr Maher, Mr Doherty-Bigarra, Mr Kershaw and Dr Barnes over a period of 29 years.
Prior to Glenwood, she was the principal’s secretary at John Ross College in Richardsbay (1988 – Dec 1992).
One of her fondest memories at Glenwood was watching three Glenwood boys, namely Warwick Chapman, Carl Petzer, and Gerrard Roberts, go from running the Glenwood IT Department during their breaks and after school, to becoming the proud owners of their own IT business, Thusa. When Warwick turned 21 the Ducks (Admin ladies at the time) took them out to dinner to celebrate. This then became a tradition, next was Carl, then Gerrard, and several other IT boys over the years that were treated to a celebratory ‘Ducks and Geeks’ dinner. According to Irene, Warwick, Carl and Gerrard epitomised the true Glenwood Boy who “Were not embarrassed to be seen out with the Old Ducks”.
Irene will not be sitting home idly, she enjoys fishing with her husband Ian whom she has been married to for more than 50 years. She will also be attending weekly Bible study and doing some charity work at local organisations.
Irene, your years of service at Glenwood have been invaluable and the legacy that you established at school will forever echo through the halls of this great establishment. We wish you well in your retirement and will forever remain firm friends.
